"handsome new production... ample humor... nicely acted... smashing job with the costumes..." -The Washington Post (Nov 2, 2020)

The Dog in the Manger is a hilarious comedy by the Master of Spain’s Golden Age, Lope de Vega, that explores the pain of love in a classist society. This production continues GALA’s history of adapting classical gems with timeless themes for today’s audiences.

WHAT OUR PATRONS THINK:

"Everything about the show clicked... being a primarily English speaker, the nice synopsis in the program (as well as the terrific director notes) along with the perfectly timed subtitles, let me follow along in real time. The director did a terrific job putting this all together, making the classic funny, but not slapstick/silly... And with all the safety protocols, it felt so great to be back in a theatre seat, and watching an outstanding production. Congratulations on a terrific show." -Greg Duffey

"We would like to congratulate the GALA team again for a wonderful production of El perro del hortelano... a most innovative set, original costumes and outstanding acting. The small audience, which gave the feeling of a just-for-us private performance... while distancing and wearing masks. All together resulted in a memorable evening." -Rosalía Rodríguez-García & John P. Williams

"Thank you for an outstanding performance of López last weekend! ...the high-level ensemble acting was superb, while the stagecraft was perfect... I sincerely appreciate GALA restoring the classics, as well as bringing serious drama from Spain..." -Christopher Robey
